Houseplant Information

Your houseplant will come in a black plastic nursery pot. It will have holes at the bottom of the pot to allow for proper drainage when watered. We recommend changing the pot when your plant arrives if you plan to grow your plant indoors.

Planting & Care

Getting Started with Your Anthurium 'Red' Houseplant

  1. Light: A red Anthurium blooms best in bright light. Bright indirect light is ideal, and gentle direct sun such as early morning light is fine, but strong midday sun can scorch the leaves. Anthuriums also adapt to fluorescent office lighting, though they flower less in dim spots.
  2. Potting and Drainage: Anthuriums grow best in a chunky, well-draining mix such as orchid mix or a blend of peat, pine bark, and perlite. This airy soil mimics their rainforest home. Use a pot with good drainage and empty any water left in the saucer.
  3. Placement: Keep it in a warm spot between 65 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit, away from cold drafts, air conditioners, heating vents, and sudden temperature changes. It makes a bold centerpiece on a table, shelf, or office desk.

Care Instructions

  1. Watering: Water when the top inch of soil feels dry, keeping the soil consistently moist but never soggy. Overwatering and standing water are the leading causes of root rot in Anthuriums, so always let excess water drain away.
  2. Humidity: Anthuriums love humidity and do best at roughly 60 to 80 percent. Raise humidity by misting the leaves, running a humidifier, or placing a tray of water nearby. Low humidity is a common cause of brown leaf tips, especially in winter.
  3. Fertilizing: Fertilize every 6 to 8 weeks in spring and summer with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer. Reduce or stop feeding in fall and winter when growth slows. Avoid overfeeding, which can build up salts in the soil and cause brown leaf tips.
  4. Pest Monitoring: Check the leaf undersides and the base of the flower stems for mealybugs, scale, spider mites, and thrips. Wipe the glossy leaves with a damp cloth to catch problems early, and treat pests with insecticidal soap or neem oil.

Maintenance and Long-Term Care

  1. Repotting: Repot every 2 to 3 years or when it outgrows its container. Choose a pot just slightly larger and refresh the soil with a fresh, airy mix. Spring is the best time, and large, crowded plants can be divided into smaller ones at repotting time.
  2. Pruning and Spent Blooms: Each bright red spathe lasts for weeks on the plant. When a bloom fades and turns green or brown, cut its stem off at the base to keep the plant tidy and direct energy into new flowers. Remove yellowed leaves the same way.
  3. Encouraging Reblooms: With good care, Anthuriums can bloom year-round. Give the plant plenty of bright indirect light and feed it regularly during spring and summer. Low light is the most common reason it stops flowering.

Additional Tips for Anthurium 'Red'

  1. Pet Safety: Anthurium is toxic to cats, dogs, and people if eaten. The plant contains calcium oxalate crystals that can cause mouth pain, drooling, swelling, and vomiting when chewed. Keep your red Anthurium out of reach of curious pets and children.
  2. Yellow Leaves: Yellow leaves usually mean overwatering or poor drainage, so check the soil and adjust your watering. Make sure the pot drains freely and never leave water sitting in the saucer.
  3. Brown Tips: Brown tips are typically caused by low humidity or too much fertilizer. Raise the humidity, especially in winter when indoor heating dries the air, and flush the soil with water to wash out excess salts.

Care Guide for Red Anthurium Houseplants

Light Requirements:
Red Anthuriums thrive in bright, indirect light. Avoid placing them in direct sunlight, as it can scorch their leaves. If natural light is limited, they can also adapt to fluorescent lighting, making them ideal for indoor spaces.

Watering:
Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Water your Anthurium when the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch. Be sure to use a pot with good drainage to prevent root rot, and empty any standing water from the saucer.

Humidity:
As tropical plants, Anthuriums love humidity. Aim for a humidity level of 60-80%. You can increase humidity by misting the leaves regularly, using a humidifier, or placing a tray of water near the plant.

Temperature:
Red Anthuriums thrive in temperatures between 65–80°F (18–27°C). Keep them away from cold drafts, air conditioners, and sudden temperature changes.

Soil:
Use a well-draining potting mix, ideally one designed for orchids or a mix of peat, pine bark, and perlite. This helps replicate their natural rainforest environment, ensuring healthy root growth.

Fertilizer:
Feed your Anthurium with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer every 6-8 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce feeding in fall and winter, as the plant’s growth slows.

Repotting:
Repot your Anthurium every 2-3 years or when it outgrows its container. Choose a slightly larger pot and refresh the soil to ensure continued growth and health.

Common Issues & Troubleshooting:

  • Yellowing Leaves: This often indicates overwatering or poor drainage. Check the soil and adjust watering habits.
  • Brown Tips: This may result from low humidity or over-fertilizing. Increase humidity levels and flush the soil to remove excess salts.
  • No Blooms: Ensure the plant receives enough light and is fed regularly during the growing season.

Toxicity Warning:
Anthuriums are toxic to pets and humans if ingested. Keep them out of reach of curious children and animals.

Decorating with Red Anthuriums:
Red Anthuriums make a bold and elegant statement in any space. Their vibrant blooms add a touch of luxury to modern interiors and warmth to more traditional designs. Whether placed as a centerpiece, on a shelf, or in an office, they bring life and color to any environment.

Why Choose a Red Anthurium?
With its year-round blooms, ease of care, and striking appearance, the Red Anthurium is a fantastic choice for anyone looking to brighten their home with an exotic touch. Its enduring beauty and air-purifying qualities make it not just a plant but a lifestyle upgrade.
