Houseplant Information

Your houseplant will come in a black plastic nursery pot. It will have holes at the bottom of the pot to allow for proper drainage when watered. We recommend changing the pot when your plant arrives if you plan to grow your plant indoors.

Getting Started with Your Hoya Australis

  1. Light: Place your Hoya 'Australis' in bright, indirect light for the best growth and flowering. A spot near an east or west window works well. It can tolerate lower light, but too little light reduces blooming and slows growth. Avoid harsh direct afternoon sun, which can scorch the glossy leaves.
  2. Potting and Drainage: Use a light, well-draining potting mix, such as potting soil blended with orchid bark and perlite, in a pot with good drainage holes. Hoyas are susceptible to root rot, so never use a pot without drainage, and choose a container only slightly larger than the root ball.
  3. Placement: Keep it in a warm spot between 60 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit (16 to 29 degrees Celsius), away from drafty or cold areas and cold winter windowsills. A potted plant starts around 12 to 24 inches tall and 12 to 18 inches wide, but its vines can eventually grow up to about 10 feet with support.

  1. Watering: Water thoroughly when the top 1 to 2 inches of soil are dry, then let the excess drain away completely. Avoid overwatering, which is the most common mistake with Hoyas. Water less frequently in fall and winter when growth slows.
  2. Humidity: Hoya 'Australis' adapts to average indoor humidity but appreciates a boost in very dry homes. Mist occasionally or run a humidifier nearby, especially in winter when indoor heating dries the air.
  3. Fertilizing: Feed with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer during spring and summer to encourage healthy growth and blooming. Reduce feeding in fall and winter when growth slows. Water before feeding so the fertilizer does not burn the roots.
  4. Pest Monitoring: Inspect the stems, leaf joints and leaf undersides regularly for mealybugs, aphids and spider mites. Remove mealybugs with a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol, and treat larger infestations with insecticidal soap, repeating weekly until the plant is clean.

Maintenance and Long-Term Care

  1. Repotting: Repot only when the plant is root bound, usually every two to three years, moving up one pot size in spring. Hoyas often bloom better when slightly snug in their pots, so there is no need to rush.
  2. Pruning and Training: Prune occasionally to control size and encourage branching, which leads to more blooms. Always trim just above a leaf node. Avoid removing the short flower spurs along the stems, since new flower clusters form there. Gently wrap new vines around a trellis, hoop or moss pole as they grow, or let them trail from a hanging basket.
  3. Cleaning and Propagation: Wipe the waxy leaves with a soft damp cloth to keep them glossy. To propagate, take a stem cutting with at least two nodes and root it in water or moist, airy potting mix in a warm spot with bright, indirect light.
